Important results from the project
The purpose of the project was to establish the groundwork for the development of adhesive-free wood and bamboo-based panels. The objective, in the initial phase, was to create a process for welding pine/bamboo strips and producing laminated veneer lumber (LVL) for use in pacifiers. If veneer welding proves feasible, it also sets the stage for manufacturing bio-based materials with water-resistant and secure welded joint seams suitable for use in demanding climates.
Expected long term effects
The project aimed to promote the environmentally friendly processing of forest raw materials and the utilization of bio-based resources. The results demonstrated the feasibility of welded bio-based panels. As an initial product, pine/bamboo pacifiers were manufactured. Additionally, the project identified technical solutions and research questions about water resistance of the welded joint and further advancements in machine development. The project consortium believes that the results surpass the initial expectations in terms of both technical and economic potential.
Approach and implementation
According to the project plan, theoretical studies were conducted, machine tool prototypes were developed, welded bamboo/pine pacifiers were manufactured, and initial tests were carried out. The project followed the plan as expected and went beyond the initial tests by preparing methods and materials to improve the water resistance of the joints in Hypothesis testing-step 2. Additionally, the project created opportunities for the ongoing development of the machine concept.
