Important results from the project

The goal of the assignment was to carry out a gap analysis connected to the Swedish financing support system within the mining, metal, mineral producing industry and the recycling industry to identify areas in the value chain that may lack financing support. Through interviews, three gaps could be identified. Gap 1 Financing opportunities for the sector will decrease drastically in 2024, Gap 2 Financing opportunities for low and high TRL levels are limited and Gap 3 The social area in the value chain has good financing opportunities but at the same time has a low number of applicants.

Expected long term effects

Three gaps could be identified, the financing opportunities for the sector will decrease drastically in 2024, financing opportunities for low and high TRL levels are limited and the social area in the value chain has good financing opportunities but at the same time has a low number applicant. The results can be used by decision-makers when considering how strategies for R&D funding should be developed in the future. The result can also increase the understanding of the applicant to highlight the system´s possibilities.

Approach and implementation

23 financiers in Sweden and in Europe were selected and data from calls for proposals in 2023 and 2024 have been collected via interviews and via their websites. The data was then analyzed by distributing identified calls for proposals to Swedish Mining Innovations´s thematic areas (the value chain) and across the TRL scale. The gap could then be visualized and identified. The funds from the calls were also distributed across the value chain to see where most of the funds are directed and also if there are areas that are underutilized.
