Call Future attractive habitats - lessons learned from pandemic

Purpose and goal

Streets are one of the cities´ most important spaces. The pandemic has highlighted and accelerated the need to be able to quickly transform streets. The project FRAMTIDSGATAN will develop solutions and processes for flexible, cost-effective, resource-efficient, climate-adapted street transformations, which are inclusive and have aesthetic qualities. There is a great need for simple, efficient street projects that can become more permanent sustainable transformations, which can be quickly scaled up. The project will build street projects in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Umeå.

Expected effects and result

The FRAMTIDSGATAN project is finished, several streets in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Umeå have been transformed into greener, healthier, more beautiful and more inclusive places, better adapted to future climate change and with more space for city life, walking, cycling, play and outdoor activities. A design guide, a blog and a conference have spread the project´s knowledge and innovations, which hopefully will inspire more municipalities to plan for future street transformation projects.

Planned approach and implementation

Projektet FRAMTIDSGATAN will be implemented in collaboration between the companies Spacescape, Edge, Norconsult, Framtiden AB, IVL and the municipalities of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Umeå. Swedish and international experiences from the pandemic are compiled, smarter design processes are investigated, prototypes for street projects are developed, transformation potential is identified, site dialogue and site analyzes, design of project streets, construction, and finally project evaluation. The project is reported in a design guide, a blog and at a national conference.
