Important results from the project

Despite 20 years of data-driven maintenance, progress is slow. Our initial goal was to build the ´industrial service centre of the future´. The rapid development of solutions for IoT, cloud and big data has shifted our goal towards solving specific obstacles to the deployment of new maintenance strategies. Intense communication efforts have contributed to increased knowledge of possibilities; a tool for evaluation of strategies supports understanding of the potential; work on business models lays the foundation for how to gain profit and to distribute profits over the actor chain.

Expected long term effects

The evaluation tool shows a potential reduction of maintenance costs with 25-40%. A framework for redefining service offers from a focus on product to a value-based approach can support SMEs and others in their modernisation processes. More dynamic planning creates a need for automated optimisation tools, based on mathematical models. The results are directly applicable across industry and create possibilities for new services, tools and consultancy activities. In the long run the results contribute to a competitive and sustainable industrial development for Sweden.

Approach and implementation

Based on current research (top-down) and hands-on work in two case studies (bottom-up), the project has produced results that promote the development and deployment of modern, data-driven maintenance. Participation in workshops and events has given input and communicated knowledge. We have found that most maintenance problems fit into a general problem description. The basis of the approach is to use existing condition counters rather than new sensors, to assess the condition of components. The project partners are very satisfied with the results and wish to continue to step 3.
