Important results from the project
The goal of the center is to strengthen materials science regarding advanced surface coatings. This is done by contributing with research on new materials, synthesis methods, properties and function. Our approach combines laboratory experiments, theoretical calculations and industrial tests. In addition to research, we train people from high school students and their teachers to university students, doctoral students and industrially active people in materials science. Goal fulfillment is good. FunMat-II will continue for 5 additional years.
Expected long term effects
We have increased knowledge of the plasma present during coating deposition and developed energy-efficient coating processes. We have developed theoretical models to predict material properties under extreme conditions, collected material data in a database that enables new materials to be discovered. We succeeded in describing how common defects occur in coatings and how they affect the properties. The education of students etc. has supplied the labor market with competent labor. Our research findings are implemented in industry with increased competitiveness as a result.
Approach and implementation
FunMat-II has 14 partners that complement each other in many different ways, with a common interest in materials science and education. The entire value chain for some of Sweden´s strongest industries is represented in some aspects, which has resulted in strong commitments on common goals. The work has been managed with a board, a director, and a steering group. Overall, the competence centra instrument is very powerful if given sufficient time gain traction, to impact a specific area. This is the case for FunMat-II after 15 years of operation.
