FraViVo - Future welfare technology by IoT

Reference number
Coordinator Skellefteå kommun
Funding from Vinnova SEK 3 404 688
Project duration February 2021 - December 2024
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme for the Internet of Things
Call IoT for innovative social benefits and a better life for everyone in a connected world

Important results from the project

The project could not continue data collection in elderly care due to legal reasons, as the technology was classified as a clear-view camera rather than an IoT sensor. The focus shifted to comparing technologies, leading to the identification of a new sensor solution capable of identifying activities in care homes. While a wide deployment was not implemented due to legal constraints, the results now make such deployment feasible.

Expected long term effects

We see that we now have the knowledge and tools to implement real-life activities regarding living in one´s own home, both with and without support from municipal care and welfare. Here we see that, for example, social welfare officers have an important role in providing the technology to secure housing for those in need.

Approach and implementation

Initially, a specific AI/ML technology was planned for use in a special care facility, but legal challenges related to GDPR prevented its implementation. Instead, an alternative radar-based technology was explored, with results showing it effectively identifies activities and deviations while ensuring GDPR compliance. The project was extended to address legal and ethical concerns, and despite obstacles, significant steps have been taken to pave the way for future wide-scale deployment.
