Important results from the project
To understand what requirements are placed on the use of residual flows and insects in the food chain an in-depth survey is important. It forms the basis for a developed list of parameters and processes for quality assurance of both feed and resource flows. The right tools are necessary as blockchain technology could be matched with IBM´s "Food trust" tool (Hyperledger). The goal is to connect all parts of the value chain to increase the possibility of circularity. An analysis of the regulations provides potential for improvement with the new digital tools as support.
Expected long term effects
Regulations regarding animal husbandry lack guidance for insect breeding. Uncertainty surrounds the application. Association IPIFF has guidelines for insects that provide some support. Today, only substrates from vegetarian residues can be used, which is a limitation. It is important that the parties continue to cooperate to find dialogue with the authorities to support interpretations and how supervision is applied without stopping development. Traceability through the digital blockchain is important tools for identifying risks and ensuring quality throughout the chain.
Approach and implementation
Cooperation throughout the value chain is crucial for increased understanding. It is important to grip problems through interviews and link it to the authorities´ requirements. External analysis through literature studies with concretization in conclusions. Deepening of critical points that create uncertainty when using food waste as feed. Identified measurement methods that support the production of data for the use and development of traceability through blockchain. A tool for risk assessment and quality assurance throughout the chain to meet rules and legal requirements.
