Important results from the project

The main purpose of the project was to investigate the potential and design of flexible mobility houses that can be shared for more functions, over a longer period of time and by more actors and thus increase the utility and economic viability. Many relevant needs linked to the FlexGate concept have been identified and the corresponding functions and services have been evaluated and prioritized according to feasibility in terms of effects, economic viability, regulations, and practical feasibility. The project also produced various proposals for the next development stage.

Expected long term effects

There is a clear demand for increased functionality compared to today´s mobility houses and some needs exist already in the construction phase. This does not mean that additional services can be offered without a thorough analysis of necessary prerequisites and finding viable business models. Flexibility of use is essential to the concept, although possessing regulatory and technical challenges. This is both to optimize the financial value and to be able to adapt to future demands and needs. A central challenge is to coordinate many stakeholders across different development phases.

Approach and implementation

The backbone of the project has been 5 co-creative workshops with over 20 different participating organizations and companies. To be able to work with realistic conditions, the analysis has mainly been based on the ongoing development of a new city district in Forsåker. The project has also studied a densification case in a socio-economically weaker area to identify differences in such applications. Conducting workshops gave the project participants the opportunity to influence, learn and network, but bilateral discussions are an important complement for a detailed analysis.
