Important results from the project
The goal of the project was to compare a number of cost-efficient RTK GPS receivers and a state-of-the-art system at Asta. Four cost-efficient GPS receivers were procured within a Skyltfnden project and adapted to use RTK correction signals from the AstaZero RTK base station or the base station at SP (SWEPOS). Five days were spent at Asta to perform static and dynamic comparison measurements. Both the City Area and the High-Speed Area of Asta were used.
Expected long term effects
Five test days at Asta resulted in the conclusion that the positioning accuracy of the cost-efficient GPS receivers are comparable to that of the much more expensive state-of-the-art system used at Asta. The only drawback is that the cost-efficient receivers only deliver positioning data at 10 Hz. However, this frequency can be improved by introducing dead reckoning between the GPS measurement points.
Approach and implementation
To make a fair comparison an antenna splitter was used to feed all five tested receivers with the same signal. For the static comparison measurements a very accurate (high sensitivity and suppression of multipaths) GPS antenna was used, and for the dynamic comparison measurements a driving robot, test car, and Asta´s vehicle GPS antenna were used.
