Expected long term effects
Textures can easily be compensated to give adequate textures on plastic parts after f. i. etching or laser engraving. It can only be used where comparatively high gloss values are acceptable/desired as (micro-)cracks in the coating made it impossible to reach the desired gloss values.
Approach and implementation
Parameters for compensation of etched textures has been evaluated and established. Gloss level adjustment has not been fully accomplished. Highly aggressive acids was used for this. Goal value was 10 12 Gloss Units (GU) measured at 60° reflection angle, but we was only able to reach 15 16 GU. Furtermore, severe problems constantly occurred as it showed occurrence of (micro-)cracks in the coating, resulting in that the aggressive etching fluid used started reacting with the underlying steel, resulting in very strong reaction that destroyed the coating where those cracks occurred.
