Venture Chips Joint Undertaking – an EU program to strengthen competitiveness in semiconductors

Purpose and goal

EECONE is a three year research and innovation action project to adopt strong scientific principles to establish approaches to reduce the electronic waste (e-Waste) throughout Europe across multiple areas using a 6R (Reduce, Reliability, Repair, Reuse, Refurbish, Recycle) approach by adopting tools, methods and guidelines that are applied to core electronic component and systems application (Automotive, Consumer Electronics, Health, Information Communication Technology, Aeronautics, Agriculture) areas via 10 use cases.

Expected effects and result

The project is expected to increase knowledge of current management of waste from electronic components and systems. Develop tools, methods and guidelines to scientifically guide the 6R approach across multiple disciplines that help to reduce e-Waste. Particular deliverables of the project are expected to improve the second use of electronic components and systems, demonstrate how employing ecodesign principles can help to reduce the e-Waste.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is made up of 5 work packages, with 2, 3 and 4 being the core technical WPs that can be considered vertical, and the 10 use cases sit horizontally and pull appropriate input from the work tasks in each of the WPs. WP2 is looking at existing activities of managing e-waste with measurements and assessment of improvements. WP4 is looking at how to reduce e-waste by improvements in the ecodesign, improved second life of electronic components and systems and improving the ECS reliability. WP1 is for management and WP5 for dissemination, and exploitation.
