Important results from the project

The main purpose of this project has been to build an electrified PTO with Li-Ion batteries, charger, electric motor, control unit and hydraulic pump to propel a larger work crane mounted on a truck chassis. The target has been to show benefits concerning environment, work environment and noise as well as energy efficiency related to a conventional PTO.

Expected long term effects

The results show that en electrified crane uses roughly 70% less energy than a conventional PTO and the noise level is 8 dB lower. The noise level is comprehended as a halve compared with conventional diesel. Besides the fact that the crane has zero emissions concerning CO2, particles and NOx, it is also using roughly 13 liter less fuel per working day at crane work. In reality it will likely be even more fuel saved as all stops and breaks ususally costs fuel at idling, but with an electric PTO the power is turned off.

Approach and implementation

The project started in February 2014. Budget was 1,62 MSEK. The project group consisted of representatives from Volvo Technology, AB Volvo, Volvo Truck Center, Hiab and Turebergs. There was also a close cooperation with suppliers. The work focused mostly on tests and preparations in for exhibitions and fairs. The noise tests and the energy measurements were performed both at Volvo Proving grounds and at a suppliers premises.
