Call Towards deeper collaboration with UK and USA partners within Health and Life Science

Purpose and goal

The project will bring together expertise from five different universities as well as the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The goal is to lay the theoretical foundation for, as well as create a first pilot version of, a model for simulating highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) among US livestock herds. The model and the results from it will be used as a basis for further work seeking funding for a larger international collaboration (with the mentioned parties) on the same theme.

Expected effects and result

The project will provide insights into the spread dynamics of HPAI among cattle in the USA, and strengthen the ties between Swedish researchers and the five other project parties. The outbreak of HPAI has considerable potential to develop into a very serious and long-lived situation. By jointly developing a tool to investigate HPAI spread, as well as to seek research funds for a large international project, excellent conditions for scientific cooperation for several years are established.

Planned approach and implementation

Work to develop the framework for a pilot version of the HPAI spread model has already begun. The next step is to specify the model´s parameters by fitting the model to the outbreak data that is available so far. Once this work has begun, the entire group will gather at a workshop to partly discuss the modeling work, and partly to design a work plan to acquire further funding. Planning for the time and place of the workshop has been initiated.
