Important results from the project
Elf@Home has developed a self-management system based on the idea of self-control of the health status and improved fitness at home, so that people over 65 can continue to be healthy. The solution consists of an intelligent service platform, that manage schedules for exercises, and it is connected to the user´s television. Portable activity sensors are connected to the ´fitness box´. The individual exercises are created and managed by the person´s formal caregivers. The primary objective was achieved throughout the project and all the major goals of the project were met.
Expected long term effects
The main technical innovation was a combination of customised exercises and medical supervision. The developed fitness box offers both indoor and outdoor exercises which are suited to the older person and can be connected to a personal medical expert. The exercises are performed at home and in the immediate environment of the elderly. ELF @ Home has developed the prototype based on self-monitoring of health status and improving fitness at home to enable older people aged over 65 to remain healthy
Approach and implementation
ELF@Home was designed with close user involvement in all stages of design, construction and testing. It was tested by users from Sweden and Spain through a number of iterations. Regular meetings were held with the users that first resulted in the specification of requirements. Later they tested functions after which they were developed and then piloted. The result was a system that monitors the self-tests and proposes a customized set of exercises that the user performs in front of the TV, and combined with supervised outdoor exercises
