Important results from the project
Conductivity is one of the quantities for the purity of water. It is important in the following sectors: pharmaceuticals, medical technology, energy, semiconductors and microelectronics. Today, only a few laboratories in the world are able to perform calibration traceable to the SI system with conductivity instrument for ultra pure water i.e. water with a conductivity of <10 micro-siemens cm. the aim was to improve the existing flow system for calibration at sp and achieve improved traceability to the si system.>10>
Expected long term effects
Previously there was a metrologically traceability for electrical conductivity using potassium chloride solutions down to ca 1 g/L. With results from this project we can now cover the conductivity range down to ultra pure water and for different temperatures and with this we can perform calibrations for industries working with pure water.
Approach and implementation
Initially the calibration system was upgraded with a wider temperature range (5-80C) where 1) there is no formation of air bubbles, 2) the conductivity is stable, and 3 important parameters such as flow, temperature and conductivity are logged. With this upgrade system an intercomparison was performed with a system with direct traceability to SI in order to get metrological traceability for conductivity in pure water.
