Important results from the project

ESCAPE-CD achieved its objective by creating a security architecture with dynamic geofencing and security contracts to ensure safe operation in autonomous mining environments. Beyond the original plans, the project also led to a patent application for its innovative safety controller and demonstrated improved safety through simulation-based validation. An unplanned results was the integration of UWB-based localization functionality to provide precise positioning in complex mining environments.

Expected long term effects

ESCAPE-CD is expected to have long-term effects by setting a new standard for autonomous mining and improving safety and productivity in mixed traffic environments. The integration of dynamic geofencing and security contracts paves the way for safer automation in the mining industry and similar sectors. These innovations can increase the Swedish mining industry´s global competitiveness, attract a diverse workforce and inspire wider use of safe autonomous systems.

Approach and implementation

The project was carried out in close collaboration between researchers at MDU and staff from Boliden, and also included cooperation with the supplier of the simulator, Robotec. Throughout the project, weekly or bi-weekly project meetings were held to discuss key issues. These meetings were complemented by five full-day workshops and a two-day on-site meeting at one of Boliden´s mines. No major adjustments to the plan were needed.
