Important results from the project
The overall goal of the SWARMs project is to expand the use of AUVs/ROVs and facilitate the creation, planning and execution of maritime and offshore operations. This will reduce the operational cost and increase the safety of tasks assigned to divers. The approach is to design and develop an integrated platform (a set of Software/Hardware components), incorporated into the current generation of underwater vehicles in order to improve autonomy, cooperation, robustness, cost-effectiveness, and reliability of the offshore operations.
Expected long term effects
MDH´s activities are in two areas, firstly, design and manufacture of AUVs with advanced sensors and high-performance computing capabilities, secondly, software solutions to for human multi-robot interaction. In both cases, there is a great potential for continuing with unique solutions that may be part of new research projects, TRL 6 and higher may be fully possible.
Approach and implementation
Geographically dispersed research teams in a project with high integration of software and hardware is not an ideal approach. The few integration events were insufficient and the potential of the consortium was not fully utilized. Implications were not as great for MDH as MDH was involved in all key parts and could work more locally.
