Important results from the project
The purpose of the project was to take robotic surgery simulation to the next level in terms of realistic visuals and physical behavior for selected universal surgery techniques: suturing and dissection. Our goals were to create proof of concepts in these techniques that showcase the latest in technology that can eventually be used by surgical robot manufacturers’ simulation training modules.
Expected long term effects
The results for this project have been very good and show great potential. Together with our project partner, there have been major strides in the ability to deliver a higher level of quality to robotic surgery simulations, including proper anatomical models, realistic tissue behaviors and visuals specifically in suturing and dissection.
Approach and implementation
With our project partner, we worked on several areas of varying complexity. We assessed our existing architecture and core technology platform and optimized our workflow for delivering simulations. We created several basic proof of concept exercises for suturing and dissection. We also worked on dissection in advanced anatomical exercises. Some simulation exercises were created using realistic anatomical models and physically based rendering techniques. Feedback from subject matter experts has been very positive and validates the technology for future use in simulations.
