Important results from the project
** Denna text är maskinöversatt ** We proposed a treatment option for the management of sports-related concussion (SRC) at the sideline. Our solution facilitates early detection and treatment of brain damage with a simple diagnostic biomarker-based department (TBICheck) and immediate on-site treatment by cooling the brain with PolarCap, a specially designed cap.
Expected long term effects
** Denna text är maskinöversatt ** This study can support clinical decision-making on the sidelines for managing concussions, determining the severity of injury, guiding a safe return to play, and predicting the long-term effects and identifying which player benefits most from brain cooling therapy (Gard A et al., Concussion. 2021 and Al-Husseini et al., manuscript).
Approach and implementation
The boxing study began and a doctoral student recruited for the project. We showed that rapid head-neck cooling significantly shortens the return to play in a large study of brain-shaken Swedish elite players in ice hockey. We used the same set in boxers and evaluated biomarker changes with or without cooling. The analysis of H-FABP has been restarted in ice hockey, and since the elite hockey league in Sweden now agreed to use PolarCap, we are restarting the study of whether the levels of this biomarker are alleviated by rapid and selective cooling after concussions in hockey players
