Important results from the project
The project´s objective was to develop technology for measuring elastic deformations in presses for sheet metal forming and numerically methods for compensating the tools the design phase. The project developed and verified a portable measuring system based on optical fibers with Fiber Bragg gratings. Further, numerical substitutive models were developed in order to considerer and compensate press deformations. Comparison with historical data showed that a compensated tool reduced the need for manual trimming, ie. grinding and polishing, by 50%.
Expected long term effects
The new measuring technique was used to characterize elastic press deformations and developed substitutive FE models was utilized to analyse and compensate the press dynamics numerically. Comparison with historical data showed that a compensated tool reduced the need for manual trimming, ie. grinding and polishing, by 50%. The expected effect of the project is that future sheet metal forming presses will be equipped with optical fibers for measuring elastic deformations and that numerical compensation will shorten lead times for tool development.
Approach and implementation
All work packages have been implemented and all project deliverables have been achieved. The original idea was that the Swedish consortium would also model a press in detail with all the components. These plans were revised because the necessary CAD data could not be obtained. Only the Spanish consortium could carry out these studies. The Swedish consortium focused on substitutive modelling. However, together the consortium was able to fulfil all the objectives.
