Important results from the project

The project has been a success with a full end-to-end autonomous below canopy drone forest analysis platform being developed, tested, and delivered to market. SCA and Deep Forestry collaborated within the project to help ensure that the drone meets the needs of the industry. The drones can precisely measure the entire stem of every tree in the forest all the way up the tree trunk. It flies autonomously in-between the trees and can measure thousands of tree per hour. The AI forest analysis pipeline is fully automatic and requires no human intervention.

Expected long term effects

The result of the project is a new drone rental and AI service that Deep Forestry offers. The drones are rented via a Product As A Service (PAAS) business model on a per drone basis with unlimited AI forest inventory analysis included. Clients all over the world are already using this product. The accuracy, precision, and scalability of this product is unique in the market. Most importantly of all, the system is being used for Sustainable Forestry Management (SFM) and environmental protection Globally. Precisely mapping the worlds forest at the push of a button.

Approach and implementation

The implementation of the project combined and further developed two prototype systems to become one complete end-to-end product. Our international stakeholder from the Netherlands delivered their part of the system one year later than expected, but this did not prevent the project from being a resounding success. All-in-all the project design and implementation worked effectively to produce a ground breaking new system that is currently being taken to market with great success.
