Important results from the project
Within this project, a new concept for dynamic optimization of sustainable concrete reinforcement for rock tunnels has been developed. A life cycle model for a rock tunnel in the West Link project was built with the aim of describing the most important physical properties of rock tunnels and demonstrating the concept of dynamic optimization for the development of climate-neutral concrete structures. Thus, the technical dimensioning according to the Q method and stochastic modeling of service life were linked to the optimization of environmental and life cycle costs with LCA and LCC.
Expected long term effects
The project has developed a new concept that accounts for the climate impact in the design stage, demonstrated the developed concept on a tunnel project, increased knowledge among the players in the sector on how climate impact can be reduced at a project level, created conditions for clients and material manufacturers to further develop their climate requirements and spread the results through publications in international journals and at conferences. KTH will use the project results in current courses and for graduate projects.
Approach and implementation
The project was carried out in close dialogue between universities and the industry to achieve a high scientific quality of the research. Within the project, an employee at NCC has been affiliated at the division for Concrete Structures at KTH. The implementation of the project included a literature study, an introductory workshop with representatives from the construction industry and InfraSweden2030. Development of optimization parameters for a rock tunnel and a principle demonstration of the optimization concept developed on a tunnel project was done.
