Important results from the project
The aim of the project is to develop a support tool that describes the challenges that an industrial product development project must manage when product development and production are organisationally and geographically separated. The objective is that the tool, which comprises e.g. recommendations, check lists or work procedures, will support project management.
Expected long term effects
Contribution of knowledge from the project includes enhanced insights into and thorough descriptions of the interdependencies that exist between product development and production when they are organisationally and geographically separated. The support tool that is developed is intended to support project management of a product development project. The results from the project are expected to contribute to better management and well-considered decisions in the innovation process, i.e. the results support an efficient and quality assured innovation process.
Approach and implementation
The research approach basically consists of a longitudinal case study of a recently started industrial product development project. The outcome of this longitudinal study will also be compared to projects in which production is located close to where the product development project is carried out. A specific study will also be carried out in which the support tool developed in the research project is implemented, tested and assessed. Additionally, potentials for integration with existing project models and information and communication tools will be investigated. The project is organised in six work packages.
