Important results from the project

The purpose of the project was to reduce costs, time and problems for modeling, design and installation of production equipment. The goal was a stable, reliable and verified working method for geometric digital twins based on 3D scanning, specially adapted for small and medium-sized companies. The project has resulted in technical solutions, guides for working methods, and web hosting for storage and access to digital production twins. The parties´ interest in technology and results has been great and set goals are considered to have been achieved.

Expected long term effects

The project developed an app that supports digitization with 3D scanning, a web host for storage and access to scanned facilities, and guides for work over the life cycle with resulting point clouds. The project has carried out several workshops, case studies at all companies, five degree projects, a licentiate and a doctoral dissertation and 17 completed 3D scans. The expected effect is increased competitiveness, among other things through increased utilization of 3D-scanned models, which increases efficiency and quality in the installation of changes in production.

Approach and implementation

The project was carried out for just over three years until Dec 2021. Participating parties were experts in 3D scanning, simulation, automation development, and manufacturing companies. The research work was based on experiences, challenges, and ideas from the various company cases, which made it possible to gradually refine and develop the methodology and technology together with the companies. Although pandemic restrictions made it difficult to conduct company studies and meetings according to plan, the experiences around the consortium, implementation and results are good.
