Purpose and goal

Process industry is entering industry 4.0, which is predicted to transform companies, business models and value chain actors from their roots. Yet, the shift in business models is uncertain and challenging. This project seeks to implement a roadmap for digital business model innovation in process industry value chains. The goal is to support process industry companies in developing their capabilities for digital business model innovation and ensure value co-creation across value chain actors.

Expected effects and result

Results include: a) A roadmap method for digital business model innovation in process industry for creating aligned business models involving multiple value chain actors. b) Improving existing competence and knowledge for digital business model innovation for providers and customers. c) Developed prototypes of digital business model innovations that combine product, service, and digital components from multiple value chain actors into commercially sustainable offerings.

Planned approach and implementation

The project starts (WP1) by identifying critical factors that influence companies’ ability to initiate digital business models with value chain actors through interviews and workshops. An implementable roadmap method for digital business model innovation is developed (WP2) and implemented (WP3) in process industry value chains with suggestions for organizational improvements. Dissemination and packaging of project results is prioritized (WP4) to ensure wider implementation in Swedish industry, academia, and society.
