Important results from the project
The aim was to develop a digital tool to perform serial pulmonary function measurement in natural exercise/competition environments, to confirm or rule out exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB). The tool should be able to replace today´s expensive and location-dependent spirometry examinations at sports clinics. Preliminary results from the clinical study show that an app-based exercise test can detect bronchial obstruction and improve EIB diagnosis, and is a feasible and simple method to detect EIB in athletes with respiratory symptoms.
Expected long term effects
The project´s expected results is to introduce a new, tested and validated product in the market for diagnosis of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in natural environments. The tool will have an easy-to-use interface and guide and instruct the patient through the process of serial lung function measurement and symptom reporting that allows for rapid and reliable confirmation or exclusion of the EIB by a physician.
Approach and implementation
1. Requiring, designing and developing a prototype on a simple and automated digital tool 2. Perform a clinical trial with top athletes to evaluate if the tool can replace today´s spirometry examinations and investigate if the information from serial lung function measurements can more effectively identify athletes with EIB 3. Develop a commercial tool based on user feedback and clinical results
