Important results from the project
The project aims to give the development of return systems for the reuse of lunch boxes and coffee mugs in Sweden a necessary push in the right direction and in the long run make Sweden a pioneering country with a more large-scale system. The project has also resulted in recommendations for upscaling and policy measures in Sweden, as well as concrete solutions for further development of the return system. The project shows that it is possible to achieve success with the reusable system for Takeaway packaging on campus.
Expected long term effects
The project has resulted in the development of a return system that was implemented by most case studies in 2020. Unfortunately, Corona has had a major negative impact on sales in the campus area. However, it can be concluded that all reusable mugs sold were used on average about 2.5 times, and reusable lunch boxes were used on average 1.2 times. The behavioral study has shown that understanding of users of the system need to be developed further. The project has resulted in recommendations for upscaling in Sweden, as well as concrete solutions for further development of the return system.
Approach and implementation
A total of 5 case studies has been carried out within the project, starting in the spring of 2020 to the end of 2020. The project split the evaluation of the return system into two main areas. Hard values within economic and environmental parameters at the transition from disposable to reusable systems were evaluated by collecting data on the actual usage of the return system. Soft values include experiences with the reusable system, behaviors and needs of employees / owners and customers which were collected through surveys and in-depth interviews.
