Important results from the project
During the project, Nanologica has developed and up-scaled a process for silica coating of photoluminescent pigments. In total, Nanologica has delivered about 25 kg of silica-coated pigment to the other project parnters.
Expected long term effects
The silica coated photoluminescent pigments show maintained photoluminescence as well as improved water resistance and chemical resistance. The same goes for the formulation of pigments in paint/ink as well as when applied on prototype corresponding to final product (photoluminescent products employed in safety protection). The ink formulation is more successful than the paint formulation: in the ink one ingredient can be excluded whereas for the paint one or more needs to be added (to reduce the high viscosity) as compared to formulation with non-coated pigment.
Approach and implementation
Along the project - when Nanologica has been evaluating different pigments, optimizing the process and up-scaled it - there has been continuous evaluation of both physicochemical and optical properties. These were performed for the silica-coated pigments as well as their formulation in paint and ink, respectively, and applied to prototype. This continuous evaluation was crucial in the decision making of each step, and the collaboration between partners to achieve this has worked splendidly.
