Important results from the project

The aim is to develop a dental implant surface with a combination of bone-strengthening drugs to enable improved healing of dental implants. Local distribution of low doses of bisphosphonates from an implant surface can lead to safer dental implant treatment, especially for high-risk patients such as patients with poorer quality of the jawbone. This group of patients is a large and growing part of the population due to, for example, older age, including a higher proportion of women in the post-menopausal stage.

Expected long term effects

The project has generated good results for the coated implants and the project has contributed to an increased understanding of how we best combine different drugs on the implant surface. An optimized coating is one of the most important results and it has contributed to us now working on a new patent application.

Approach and implementation

The implants have been evaluated in animal studies and the main task in this project is to provide a stop / go decision point for continuation in pre-clinical and clinical trials for a possible market approval. The project has led to a greater understanding of how to combine drugs on the implant surface and has included development of a good animal model for analysis of implants in a bone that resembles a jawbone of inferior quality, which is an important piece of the puzzle also in the rest of the dental implant world´s quest to be able to find safe implant treatments for this patient group.
