Development of manufacturing process for superconducting accelerator coil

Reference number
Coordinator SCANDITRONIX MAGNET AKTIEBOLAG
Funding from Vinnova SEK 350 381
Project duration November 2017 - February 2019
Status Completed

Important results from the project

The goal of this project w as to as the first Swedish company take the first steps into the market of superconducting magnets. We have seen for a long time that more and more laboratories are moving towards superconducting magnets instead of conventional resistive. This is both because of the decreased power losses as w ell as the much greater field strength achievable. We see the project as a success from multiple angles since we have both succeeded with the advanced, and for us new, production as well as strengthening our relations with laboratories which could lead to future projects.

Expected long term effects

The final results regarding the coil´s performance will not be known until CERN has taken it through their measurement campaign. There it will be cooled down to just above the absolute zero where its superconducting properties will appear. The coil differs significantly from our standard production which has demanded us to go through the entire production step-by-step and modify our procedures accordingly. Some of the new processes might also be applicable in our standard production. We are already in contact with people from outside of our company regarding possible future projects.

Approach and implementation

The original planning and the foreseen actions for the project worked out great. It has been necessary to keep close contact with specialists in the field at both the FREIA laboratory as w ell as CERN in order to gather the information and know ledge required. As well as a close contact with our subcontractors to get the precision machined parts made correctly.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
