Important results from the project
The final aim of the project is to develop efficient processes for P-extraction from the P-rich aviary litter ashes generated from incineration of biowastes from the chicken industry aiming for substitution of the imported phosphate rock and thereby minimize the EU dependence of this critical material. Three different approaches have been successfully developed including a novel method from Swerim for thermal extraction of P. A new project based on the Swerim concept has already been created for further verification of the concept. The DEASPHOR project has achieved its goal by 100%.
Expected long term effects
For the project as a whole, advanced characterization and beneficiation tests for efficient P-extraction have been conducted. The incineration process has been modelled and optimized. Three novel P-extraction approaches have been developed in the project. One of the them, developed by Swerim, has been considered as being highly innovative. The DEASPHOR consortium members agreed to apply a new ERAMIN 3 project (PHIGO) based on the concept aiming for upscaling and further refining of the concept. The PHIGO project has been granted and started recently.
Approach and implementation
The project consists of 9 WPs. The WPs include: - WP2 for process inventory, sampling campaigns, characterization including visits to two industrial partners. Samples and data were collected for analysis, process development and modelling works - WP3 and WP4 incineration tests performed in lab and industry respectively - WP5 P extraction from the P-rich ashes, 3 methods were developed using both thermal and chemical approaches. WP6: evaluated the obtained P-products - WP7 and WP8 for Zero Waste assessment and CO2-footprint evaluation WP9 coordinate Swerim involved in WPs 2-7
