Important results from the project
Bio-based materials such as wood offer countless possibilities of innovation and are promising from a sustainability aspect, especially in environments with large forests and forestry already in place. Deprotion aimed to build the conditions to develop a general innovative product development model based on the material-driven-design method in combination with digital tools such as design automation. Through sub-projects with industry partners, we identified the limitations and benefits of the current models and formulated the requirements for a new model.
Expected long term effects
During the project, we analyzed how material-driven-design method can support companies´ development of new products to reach new markets. In sub-projects, design automation as a digital tool was analyzed that streamlines product development in the wood industry. New product design concepts were developed to inspire partner companies to extend their existing portfolio. The results could help the industry gain knowledge about material-driven-design, material experience, design automation and market trends.
Approach and implementation
The project was implemented in 4 main work packages together with industry partners and RISE innventia AB. Various sub-projects with industry partners were conducted including 3 large projects that ended up with working/physical full-size prototypes with reports and 32 conceptual design projects with mock-ups and posters. Interviews were conducted with industry partners to explore the possible markets and understand how they are working with design projects and processes related to wood.
