Important results from the project
The objective of the project was to develop concepts for services, based on open traffic data (DATEX II), that facilitate the distribution of goods under the construction period of the West Swedish Solution (a large infrastructure investment package). The winning service was selected by a jury of goods distributors and Gothenburg city. It addressed the problem at hand with an attractive service concept with opportunities to longer term expansions. The winning team will be supported by the goods distributors and project partners in developing and testing the service further.
Expected long term effects
The contest has resulted in a service prototype that goods distributors in Gothenburg can use to increase situational awareness of the prevailing traffic conditions for goods deliveries in a situations where the traffic is disturbed heavily by construction work. Four private goods distributors (DSV, Renova, DHL, and Schenker) have contributed to the project by formulating their needs for information in different stages of the distribution process and by judging the contestants contributions.
Approach and implementation
The project setup worked out as it was planned approximately. The project plan did not include price money and arranging sponsors was a big challenge at the start of the project. The use of DATEX II as an open data sources has proven to be a high barrier for teams to participate in the contest even if this barrier was reduced by a DATEX II workshop and direct support from Trafikverket. Simultaneously those that already had relevant knowledge about DATEX II needed to understand the needs of distributors. A workshop with the goods distributors was organized and information films were made.
