Important results from the project
GreenIron has built a demonstration site in Sandviken for fossil-free hydrogen reduction of iron ore and steel industry residues. A reduction furnace and heat exchanger system were developed, with gas handling and auxiliary equipment such as a preheating furnace. The environmental permit was granted in 2024, with construction and commissioning to finish in 2025. Material from Viscaria (formerly Copperstone) was tested on a small scale. The project has met its goals.
Expected long term effects
The project has led to a full-scale facility that is now ready for production. The facility has the ability to handle residual products and by-products from the steel industry through its unique technology for fossil-free reduction with hydrogen.
Approach and implementation
The project was implemented in five major work packages: 1/ equipment design and construction, 2/ demonstration site and environmental permitting, 3/ facility construction, 4/ demonstration and testing, and 5/ project management. All work packages have involved close collaboration between project partners, consultants, and subcontractors.
