Defence Benefits of Wind Power- Demo

Reference number
Coordinator Elevated Launch AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 3 000 000
Project duration November 2024 - November 2025
Status Ongoing
Venture Civil-military synergies
Call Collaborative project for civil-military synergies

Purpose and goal

The project aims to demonstrate civil-military synergies showing that wind turbines, through their location, height and access to electricity and communications, are excellent platforms for defense systems, such as sensors, radars, drones for monitoring airspace and sea surface, autonomous underwater vehicles (if offshore based wind turbines) for monitoring critical underwater infrastructure. At the end of the project, the concepts are expected to be technically mature for the market.

Expected effects and result

Properly implemented, the project may result in changing the current conflicting objectives, between the need for good defence capabilities and the need for more wind power, into synergies. Thereby, the project may enable the expansion of wind power and the establishment of new defence capabilities in cost-effecient and innovative ways.

Planned approach and implementation

The project, implemented through demonstrations, seminars, legal investigations and other evaluations and involving stakeholders and partners from the whole value chain, consists of 4 work packages: 1: Project management. Investigating legal conditions integrating defence in wind turbines 2: Communication and events 3: Surveillance airspace and sea surface with radar, sensor, drones in wind turbines 4: Surveillance underwater infrastructure with autonomous underwater vehicles in wind turbines
