Important results from the project
The project was initiated to support the development of a sustainable and bio-based circular textile industry in Sweden. The project contained three main initiatives, two focused on textile recycling techniques, while the third explored new fibre blends and yarn spinning. These three sub-projects have had a strong focus on a systems perspective, where parts of existing and new value chains have been analysed to identify how they can interact and increase the circularity of bio-based textiles.
Expected long term effects
The CITEX project ended in December 2024, but the work toward a non-toxic, bio-based textile value chain continues. Despite progress, challenges remain, and further research is needed. Key findings include improvements in textile recycling, fiber blends, and yarn spinning techniques. However, challenges around integrating recycled and bio-based materials into a circular value chain require attention to social and political concerns to ensure economic, social, and political sustainability.
Approach and implementation
The main purpose of the coordination project was to be responsible for the coordination of its three sub-projects. The goal was to ensure efficient information transfer between the actors, and monitor and support the progress of the sub-projects. The purpose was also to be responsible for the dissemination of knowledge between the innovation projects and external actors by creating meeting places and events, and to coordinate collaboration with other related research and innovation activities.
