Important results from the project
The goal was to create a solution that can contribute to an increased digitization of the rural areas of India. We have created a prototype that enables distribution of information by satellite in a cost-efficient way with a user interface where information easily can be packaged and scheduled to be transmitted and then reached with a web browser. This solution, where we use multicast, means that no additional infrastructure is needed and is easy to install in villages to give locals access to information that can be distributed by companies and organizations to many users simultaneously.
Expected long term effects
In the project we have developed a cost-efficient solution that enables village offices and other institutions in India to gain more access to information such as Government services, education and healthcare. The user friendly system means that an organization or company quickly and easily can create and distribute information to areas which otherwise would have been hard to reach. An investment in this solution could mean increased possibilities for education, healthcare and entertainment to citizens who lack access to that today.
Approach and implementation
The project consisted of two phases where we in the first phase developed a prototype for effective distribution of information over satellite to many users simultaneously. During phase two a trial with the finished solution was carried out at village offices in India. We demonstrated a well-functioning system by sending e.g. educational and healthcare material in the form of documents, websites and videos together with the latest news. Locals connected their smartphones and computers by Wi-Fi to see the material. The next step is to develop the prototype to a market ready product.
