Important results from the project
The competition´s goal of obtaining a material that contained 90% recycled plastic from consumer packaging was not achieved, but the winning contribution contained about 60% recycled plastic from consumer packaging. It is a long step towards a circular economy. If the competition was to be conducted more times, it is likely that the goal could be achieved. The purpose of the competition, which was to increase the acceptance of recycled plastics and to find new applications for recycled plastic from packaging, has been achieved as a result of the project´s implementation.
Expected long term effects
Two manufacturers of plastic films have begun to sell products containing plastic from recycled consumer packaging. The project has led to the fact that several users of plastic film have begun to review which of their packaging could be made from recycled plastic.
Approach and implementation
The project was conducted as a competition where the prize was to have its material tested and evaluated for a new application with great potential. Both the contestants and the participants in the jury could benefit from the media attention in connection with the competition. The competition led to important contacts in the value-chain for recycled plastic raw materials.
