Important results from the project
The purpose of the project has been to elevate the citizens to the heart of the smart city in order to drive sustainability performance through their engagement. The project´s idea was to create value for residents in order to thereby create a long-term commitment to sustainability. The value created was to co-create a social infrastructure that simplifies the residents´ local everyday life and contributes to increasing local social capital. The project has successfully fulfilled its purpose by delivering frameworks, technology, demonstration projects and evaluation methods.
Expected long term effects
The project has developed a mechanism for citizen engagement on local sustainability goals by first strengthening the social sustainability of the neighborhood. A competence network on citizen engagement and social capital in smart cities has been established. The project has developed an evaluation method for sustainable neighborhoods and has been able to follow up qualitative and quantitative sustainability goals including energy attitudes, intentions, and behaviors as well as trust, social identity and safety.
Approach and implementation
The project was initiated with a stakeholder needs assessment to verify the original assumptions of the project. Based on the verified needs, processes, structures and technology have been developed for sustainable neighborhoods, in an agile process with residents. The social infrastructure has been implemented in 10 neighborhoods where the project demonstrated the possibilities of engaging residents in the local circular economy. The citizen engagement has successfully been utilized by the municipality, academia, infrastructure companies, and local organizations.
