Important results from the project

The objective of the Circularis project was to develop innovative support based on lifecycle costs for Swedish manufacturers to design products/services for resource efficiency and sustainability and, by using the support, to develop three innovative solutions. The project also aimed to evaluate the environmental implications of those solutions in quantitative terms. Disseminating the results to industry and thereby to increase the knowledge in industry was one of the goals.

Expected long term effects

A guideline for the innovative design support was developed (for English publication) and, thanks to additional dissemination funding, was transformed into an easier-to-read version in Swedish. The guideline was applied to the three industry partners to co-develop improved solutions. The consequences of the application were assessed by life cycle costing and life cycle assessment. These results were disseminated to industry beyond the consortium. The software planned to be part of the design support was not completely realized.

Approach and implementation

The project adjusted its activities to a certain extent while it was carried out. The adjustment concerned the realization of the design support. The software implementation was hindered by the unexpected lack of resource of the software-development partner, and hence achieved only to a “half-product”. Except this issue, the project was carried out according to the project plan as good as possible; the three other industry partners (as lead users of the design support) improved their offerings and the researchers produced scientific publications with high quality.
