Purpose and goal

The rise of quantum technology (QT) has opened the eyes of the ICT industry with respect to cryogenics. It is considered to be an enabler that brings in quantum functionalities and enhanced system performance and we are observing a massive growth of cryogenics from coolers to cryogenic electronics and photonics. ArCTIC is a joint effort of top European RTOs, industrial fabrication facilities, and leading application partners (23 industrial, 7 RTO and 4 academic), who share the vision to take a joint European step towards the era of cryogenic classical and quantum microsystems.

Expected effects and result

We will develop quantum processor platforms and broaden the applicability of microelectronic devices and circuits for cryogenic operation by developing cryo-compatible (i) ultra-lowloss substrates and thin-films, (ii) microelectronic circuits, and (iii) semiconductor packaging and heterogeneous-integration techniques, and (iv) by benchmarking the developed technologies. Industrial ArCTIC-demonstrators and applications will enable the European industry to maintain and expand its leading edge in semiconductor components, processes and QT.

Planned approach and implementation

The Swedish consortium consists of Lunds Universitet in collaboration with NordAmps AB. Through collaboration with European partners, LU will work on up-scaling of III-V technology on Si substrates, optimization of ferroelectric films and components for cryoapplications, and demonstrate transistor technology. NordAmps will contribute to the ArCTIC project by developing and demonstrating new sampling concepts of ultra-low phase noise microwave generation for scaling and optimization of qubit readout in future quantum processors.
