Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project was to develop and market introduce charcrete (concrete products with biochar) for urban vegetation systems. The project resulted in the launch of Sweden´s probably first charcrete product, in the form of a tree pit foundation and inlet plate for a rain bed, and more products are planned to be launched in the autumn of 2021. In charcrete the biochar replaces parts of the ballast in the concrete, which results in a more climate friendly product due to the carbon sink that is created with the biochar.

Expected effects and result

Within the project, charcrete products were developed. Design of prototypes was designed in dialogue with customers. The products have been adapted to the necessary strength requirements and qualities, and recipes have undergone external tests at RISE. In the project there was an attempt to utilize the low density of biochar to get a lighter concrete. But this was not compatible with the requirements for the products. Instead, high strength and quality has been sought. The project has contributed to increased awareness of the potential of biochar as a carbon sink in building materials.

Planned approach and implementation

The project began with a literature study on biochar in concrete for input to prototype development. The project involved potential customers in the work of developing and testing prototypes and recipes during the autumn and winter of 2020. Climate benefits with biochar in concrete were analysed early with the support of a doctoral student with expertise in biochar and LCA calculation. The collaboration with customers, academia and early initiation of new business collaborations proved to be a key for finding the right requirements for recipes and end products.
