Important results from the project

The project aimed to carry out a health economic evaluation for a preventive health initiative to prevent metabolic syndrome and to map its implementation possibilities. The work has resulted in a report and first prototype for a digital calculator to calculate potential health economic benefits of similar preventive measures. In the long run, the work forms a basis for enabling a health care system that focuses on preventive measures instead of treatment.

Expected long term effects

The project has resulted in an overview of potential costs and health benefits of implementing a preventive health initiative aimed at the prevention of metabolic syndrome. The potential costs and health benefits have been calculated per region and a website has been created to make the calculations available to regional decision-makers. The project has opened up opportunities for more initiatives that can help apply research on health economics in practice and that can improve and simplify decision-making on preventive measures.

Approach and implementation

The project is based on an intervention developed during the EIT Health project StopMetSyn. The evaluation was carried out by RISE and the University of Gothenburg with advice from Uppsala University. RISE has developed a website where the results are made available to regional decision-makers. The project also included a qualitative study on decision-making regarding the implementation of preventive measures. This has created new insights in underlying structures that must be addressed in order for health economic evaluations and prevention to be of greater benefit in practice.
