Important results from the project

The purpose has been to develop planning and decision support for more circular management of excavated soils. Knowledge from construction logistics can support the development of mass logistics and combined with modern transport solutions the solution is even more beneficial. Different business arrangements can be used depending on the situation, but the municipality often has an important role to play for a more circular material flow. The solution requires a combination of competencies and solutions throughout the value chain as well as the courage to break established patterns

Expected long term effects

Resource-efficient and circular management of excavated soils with the help of logistics centres can reduce the energy use for heavy mass transports by more than 50% and the material recycling can be increased by 80%. Particularly large effects are achieved by connecting the solutions for mass logistics with electrification of heavy vehicles alternatively or with the use of high capacity transport trucks, HCT. The project also shows the importance of benefiting from a digitized information flow. All participating problem owners currently work to implement solutions in practice.

Approach and implementation

The project has been implemented through four WP that have been presented and discussed at joint seminars and study visits. Both digital and physical meetings have been used. Digital meetings enabled the project to reach more people, while physical meetings were crucial for deepening the knowledge the solutions in practice. The physical meetings also turned out to get participants from different municipal administrations to meet internally develop the issue. The composition of the project has represented the entire value chain, which proved to be a very important dimension.
