Purpose and goal

The vision of the BioGlue-Centre is to significantly reduce the dependency on fossil-based materials in the adhesive industry by developing paradigm-shifting knowledge of bio-based adhesives and becoming a world-leading research environment in Sweden. To achieve the vision, key research groups and stakeholders along the value chain in the Centre will develop new fundamental knowledge, including methods and technologies on bio-based adhesive systems that will receive international attention, and act as an enabler for industrial implementation.

Expected effects and result

The BioGlue-Centre supports Sweden’s vision to be a bio-based and circular economy by 2050, and creates the conditions for a stronger and more systematic cooperation between universities and companies in the forest-based furniture, packaging, and building sectors. New solutions making the application of bio-adhesives possible in the industry will substantially impact the sectors’ sustainability. Eventually, the Centre will promote innovation and R&D by offering new methods and sustainable processes to meet relevant business- and societal demands in Sweden and globally.

Planned approach and implementation

The BioGlue-Centre consortium is built to be highly representative of the forest-based furniture, packaging and building sectors. Fifteen partners along the value chain will participate, including universities, bio-based feedstock providers, adhesive manufacturers, end-product manufacturers, and associations. Projects in the Centre in the form of PhD or postdoctoral studies will effectively respond to challenges of the sectors in terms of raw materials, aspects of bio-adhesives, application requirements of bio-adhesives in the industry and sustainability.
