Important results from the project
BioEk 2.0 has improved knowlede about valorisation of residues from forestry, agriculture and aquaculture through six sub-projects and a coordination project. Residues that today are burned or used for animal feed have moved closer to becoming more valuable products. Coordination activities have been carried out to support the sub-projects, find synergies and deal with common challenges such as raw material supply, energy integration, environmental assessment and market implementation, e.g. regulations for new foods and requirements to move from laboratory to full scale.
Expected long term effects
The result of the coordinating activities is increased collaboration between the participating research groups, as well as with the participating industrial actors. This can lead to that residues from forestry, agriculture and aquaculture being used more quickly for valuable products. Also, knowledge has been developed about raw material supply, innovation systems, life cycle analysis and energy integration within the area. For example, challenges with new foods have been identified that are relevant to several research projects aimed at the transition to a bioeconomy.
Approach and implementation
The coordination was coonducted by IVL, which arranged meetings and assisted in communication efforts. For the sub-projects, the physical meetings when they were shown each other´s laboratories and had discussions about common challenges were particularly rewarding. The responsibility for the coordination activities was divided into three different actors: CIT, IVL and RISE. These collaborated with the sub-projects included in each activity, especially regarding input data for the analyzes. The results from the activities were shared and discussed with the entire project.
