BioComposites - Packaging

Reference number
Coordinator INNVENTIA AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 30 000
Project duration December 2016 - May 2017
Status Completed

Important results from the project

The aim of the present project is to formulate a future project to exploit biocomposites and bioplastics in packaging and gather a project consortium. The packages can be hard packages like trays and cans as well as soft bottles.

Expected long term effects

The prestudy resulted in a complete project plan and a comprehensive project consortium for the value chain for biocomposites in packaging. This is expected to lead to implementation of a full project for biocomposites in packaging. The full project gives positive environmental impacts such as reduced fossil oil dependence and reduced amount of plastic residues in the world´s ocean and also increased revenue for the Swedish forest industry.

Approach and implementation

The prestudy focused on the subproject planning: Stakeholders was identified with defined tasks and access to relevant technology combined with expectations. Testing of the chosen technologies that fit the manufacturer´s product portfolio ensured an active participation. The subproject packaging will concern topics on: -Interaction between reinforcement materials and bioplastics -Materials performance and properties -Processability of composite materials -Converting performance -Product performance such as tactility, food safety and recycling
