Venture Challenge-Driven Innovation – Stage 1 initiation

Important results from the project

The project aims at developing a solution for sustainable aviation, specifically biofuel production from forest industry residues. The objectives of the project have mainly been achieved, for example through the identification of the most promising technologies and opportunities to demonstrate this as well as work with business models. However, the goal of initiating further work towards the practical implementation of the technology demonstration immediately following the completion of this project phase has not been achieved.

Expected long term effects

The following objectives have been met: 1. Identified the most promising technologies, including costs and performance 2. Identified product quality requirements and product certification requirements 3. Identified preliminary business model for the introduction of bio jet fuel 4. Good knowledge of relevant public and commercial initiatives. 5. Identified opportunities to demonstrate the technology The following objectives have not been fully met: 6. Associate relevant actors with the consortium and draft agreements 7. Preliminary UDI phase 2 project proposal

Approach and implementation

The project has been organized in five work packages (WP): 1. Raw materials and production technology 2. Sustainability and certification 3. Business Models 4. Intelligence and synthesis 5. Prepare the next step Work in the WP1-4 has largely followed the to plan and has been based on information collected through a large number of contacts with relevant actors as well as internal knowledge. The part of WP5 relating to consortium building has not met objectives, as some actors currently do not see a clear business model. Possibly, better communication from our side could have helped.
