Purpose and goal

BATT:RE, is a nine-month feasibility study that addresses challenges in information management for the electric vehicle battery supply chain. By analyzing current practices and identifying pain points at two major OEMs for heavy vehicles, along with recycling company and universities, the project lays the foundation for a larger R&I project within FFI Circularity-program. The goal is to improve traceability, information systems and support EU initiatives for battery passports.

Expected effects and result

Batt:RE aims to enhance resource-efficient sourcing, manufacturing, and end-of-life battery handling, supporting the EU´s battery passport initiative. It lays the groundwork for a larger FFI Circularity R&I project, focusing on three key areas: (a) traceability and product passports for sourcing and end-of-life, (b) extending EV battery lifespan through information sharing and second-life applications, and (c) addressing logistical challenges and regulatory differences in battery transport.

Planned approach and implementation

The study analyzes battery circularity from three perspectives: (i) legal, operational, and traceability, (ii) mapping information flow to identify inefficiencies and gaps in data accuracy, transparency, and accountability, and (iii) examining current circularity practices and defining focus areas aligned with regulations. The study combines OEM insights and cross-case analysis using workshops, interviews, and observations, with results disseminated and applied to shape future R&I project.
