Important results from the project

The project has developed methods to systematize exploration and analysis of aircraft concepts, and demonstrated its usefulness through a concrete use case, the design of an autonomous unmanned AEW/ISR aircraft. The project resulted in a demonstration of a visual analysis environment where different options could be weighed against each other to facilitate and support decisions. Where the results from the project will partly contribute to improved methodology and working methods at Saab, and better understanding of design and challenges with an unmanned AEW/ISR aircraft.

Expected long term effects

The project has demonstrated capabilities around the simulation and design of an autonomous and sustainable AEW/ISR aircraft, with a systematic approach that connects requirements and design space in an effective way. The project has been documented in a number of publications presented at international conferences and journals. Parts of the outcome will be applied directly to the Saab internal project. Other will be applied at Linköpings University.

Approach and implementation

The project work has been carried out as expected from an overall point of view. The covid pandemic has affected the project by reducing live interaction, this was compensated with digital workshop, reducing the chance of some feedback. The last year of the project was slightly affected by the fact that one of the employees at Linköpings Universitet ended his service in favor of a new job. This led to a reorganization of the project and a few retakes without major impact. The involvement of degree workers was positive and contributes to the relevance of the education.
